If inexpensive, fresh-air fun is top of the agenda, then The Sir Harold Hillier Arboretum and Gardens in Romsey always gets my thumbs up. The beautifully maintained gardens are perfect for picnics and hide and seek. It’s a great place to go with friends and kids and make a day of it.

While we tend to make a base for the day, you must take time for a wander round. The gardens are huge with lots of different areas to explore. I try to make sure I head to a different part every time I visit.

Once energy levels are lulling, a visit to the lovely Visitor Pavilion is a must. The stunning views here make the perfect spot for some late afternoon tea and cake.
